Used in:

  • To talk about something that happen in the past.
  • Activities realized in a specific moment, time ago. Use of time markers is necessary 






Grammar Simple past statements - regular verbs


Affirmative

Subject  +  verb in the past  +  complement



Examples:

I played a video game.

You studied math.

He watched a movie.

She wanted to stay home.

We cooked italian food.

They chatted online.




Negative

Subject  +  didn't  +  verb base form  +  complement



Examples:

I didn't play chess

You didn't study English

He didn't watch TV

She didn't want to go out.

We didn't cook Chinese food.

They didn't chat very long.





Past tense endings

watch  -->  watched 

invite   -->  invited

play     -->  played

study   -->  studied

chat     -->  chatted




Simple past yes/no questions and short answers

Auxiliar Did  +  subject  +  verb base form  +  complement  +  ?



Did you go out a lot last week?

   Yes, I did. I went to a movie and a party.

   No, I didn't. I didn't go out a lot.


Did you play tennis last weekend?

   Yes, I did. I played tennis last Sunday.

   No, I didn't. I didn't play tennis.
